Report on the Recent Hiking and "Changa Chet" Event by DWIT Hiking Club

On October 19th, 2024, the DWIT Hiking Club organized a hike to Jarsing Pauwa in collaboration with the Lions Club Kathmandu City Chabahil (LCKCC). The group gathered at the college at 7:00 AM, ready for the day ahead. With around 33 participants, 17 from DWIT the rest were LCKCC members, it was a well-attended event.

We began the journey with a bus ride towards Jarsing Pauwa. Given the early start, we stopped at Sankhu for a quick breakfast, allowing everyone to fuel up for the hike. After another 30 minutes on the road, we arrived at the base of the trail.

The hike officially started at 8:47 AM. Our destination was a large open ground above Jarsing Pauwa, where the "Changa Chet" event was planned. The trail was about 5.5 kilometres, mostly uphill. The morning air was fresh, and the surroundings were peaceful. We passed grazing animals, and blooming crops and crossed two rivers along the way. The scenic beauty made the climb worthwhile.

The presence of LCKC members added a different flavour to the hike. Their ages ranged from mid-20s to late 60s, and their cheerful energy helped keep the mood light. They brought snacks, and some even shared cultural foods, which was a nice touch. A local dog and cat also followed us from the base, and they quickly became part of the group, much to everyone’s amusement.

By the time we reached the top, we were ready for a break. The restaurant owner, who had driven up, kindly brought snacks for everyone, which was much appreciated. After some rest, the activities began. Kites were flown, and several games were organized, including Musical Chair, a kite-flying competition, and simple games like "Grab the Stick." The winners were Sudin Rajbhandari and Kritishma Singh Maharjan from Deerwalk. Subash Ghimire from LCKCC won the kite-flying event, and Radhika Ghimire from LCKCC won the Musical Chair game. The event also featured games with prizes awarded to Lion Subash Ghimire for Changa Chet, Lion Radhika Niraula for Musical Chair, Sudin Rajbhandari for Stick Hold, and Kritishma Maharjan for the In/Out game.

After the games, we carried out a short ground-cleaning campaign. The amount of trash collected was impressive—so much that it couldn’t all fit in the bus. This was the largest garbage collection LCKCC had seen during a hike of over 10 bags.

After the ground-cleaning campaign, we had a spontaneous 30-minute dancing session. Music played through a portable speaker, and everyone, regardless of age, joined in. The LCKC members brought great energy, encouraging others to participate. It was a fun, lighthearted way to wind down after the hike and cleanup, adding a lively end to an already enjoyable day.

By 3:30 PM, we wrapped up the day and started heading back. We made a stop at MW Rooftop Restaurantnear the base of Jarsing Pauwa for a late lunch. The food was simple and affordable, and it gave everyone a chance to relax after the hike. We eventually reached the college at around 5 PM, bringing the day to a close.

Special thanks go to Surendra Sir from LCKC for making the collaboration possible and helping manage the event smoothly. The hike was well-organized, and both the students and LCKC members seemed to enjoy it. We look forward to future collaborations with LCKC for similar events.
