Posted Date: 17th September, 2013
Photo Description:
Indra Jatra begins every year from Bhadra Dwadasi to Ashwin Krishna Chaturdasi. It is an eight day long festival. This year it started from September 16 and will go on till September 24. The official calendar day for the festival is September 18, 2013.
The festival begins at Hanuman Dhoka with the carnival-like erection of the Linga (Yasingh) by the local newar people, mainly Manandhars. There is a flag on the top of the ceremonial pole. This thirty-six feet long wooden pole is chosen with great care from the Nala forest in Kavre district, east of Kathmandu. According to the traditional beliefs, Indra had received this flag from Lord Vishnu for protection.
