Swagata Luitel
Sometimes, the best way to bond with your respected seniors and coworkers is not in the conference room or the break room, but out on the trail, inhaling fresh air and having meaningful conversations. At 7 a.m., eleven of us gathered at 109 Degrees Restaurant for a hearty breakfast. The buttered bread and warm milk tea provided the perfect start to the day. After finishing breakfast, we were ready to embark on our excursion, although we didn't know our destination. Suddenly, Rudra Dai chose our hiking route for February 2, 2025.
Finally, we learned about the destination, which heightened our excitement to its peak. We packed our bags with some energizing fruits and snacks. Our organizing team left no stone unturned to ensure our journey was smooth and enjoyable. For the day, an office Hiace transported us to Jarsing Pauwa, marking the start of our adventurous journey.
Our hike starts at 8:45 a.m. from Jersing Pauwa. Rudra Dai and Dev Dai led the way, their positive energy pulling the entire group forward. After walking for 45 to 50 minutes, we arrived at the admission desk for Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park. Then, Rudra Dai asked me what my name was. I replied, "My name is Swagata." No, I'll give you a nickname: "Swaggs." That sounds great, he responded with a teasing smile. Our team was fully prepared for an exciting day filled with laughter, jokes, and shared experiences.
The story!!!
I felt a bit nervous about this hike because I had heard that Rudra Dai is strict. However, since it was my first journey with him, I was pleasantly surprised by how friendly and approachable he was. His adventurous spirit greatly motivated us. The lush greenery of the forest, Dai's captivating stories, and the breathtaking mountains we encountered added to the charm of the journey.
Shankarapur, located at an altitude of 1,434 meters, was a significant stop along our trek. Pratigya Pokhrel, one of our team members, initially faced challenges due to the unfamiliar terrain, as this was her first hike. However, with the continuous support from the team, especially from Sudina Didi, she shared her inspiring stories and grew more confident in her abilities. We were truly moved by her journey.
Words cannot express the breathtaking view from Shankarapur Hill. We could see Mt. Everest, Langtang Himal, Lakpa Dorje Himal, and Ganesh Himal all clearly. The stunning scenery revitalized our slightly fatigued bodies. We not only enjoyed the view but also captured the moment with some group photos, filled with laughter, and continued our trek towards our destination.
The narrow path winding through the heart of the forest, the chirping of birds, and the gentle sound of the creek all contributed to a wonderful journey. At times, our fellow trekkers led the way, engaging in lively conversations and playful teasing. Eventually, we reached our destination, Dhap Dam.
The Destination: Dhap Dam
The dam is situated at an elevation of 2,085 meters above sea level. The lush green forest on one side, the dam wall, the large lake formed by the dam, and the blue water of the lake were truly mesmerizing. We reached the edge of the lake, took a deep breath, and rested on the carved stones, getting lost in its beauty.
After resting for a while, we took out the fruits, dried fruits, and chocolates we had packed before the hike. We also snapped numerous pictures in various poses. Deependra dai, Krishal dai, Riyaj dai, Basanta dai, and Deepsan dai took some fun photos striking Sarukhan poses.
However, we were disappointed to see piles of plastic litter on the dam's side and the lack of proper waste management. It's a sincere request to everyone who visits Dhap Dam: please collect the plastics you bring and take them back with you or dispose of them properly in the dustbin.
As it was time to head back, we admired the blooming rhododendrons on the hillside. Dipen Dai and Basant Dai picked some for us. We enjoyed the views of the village and the villagers at work. Basant Dai and Dipsan Dai lightened our spirits with jokes, noticing everyone’s tired expressions.
We walked through the tea garden and finally arrived at the Trout Village Resort and Farm, where we were greeted with delicious food, fresh fish, and hot tea. After a fantastic meal, we boarded a Hiace van around 4:45 p.m. and arrived at 109 Degrees Restaurant by 6:30 p.m.
In the end, it wasn’t just about the distance we traveled, but about walking together, supporting one another, and finding joy in the journey. Here’s to more challenges, more victories, and to the incredible team that makes it all worthwhile!
